Who are you: Your law school resume needs to provide more than a list of your past experience, achievements and grades. It needs to answer a much larger question: who are you? Personal statement: Answer in one sentence who you are, and be as unique as possible in your personal statement. Passionate, Driven, Curious, Exceptional, Innovative, etc are meaningless buzzwords. All those words mean are No, Chance, Of, Getting, In. You have to be different. You need an interest in additional to law. Maybe its the environment, and you went to undergrad for geology. Maybe it is communications, medical, engineering. Whatever it is, its who you are, and its your personal statement. Your personal statement is the first section, right under your name. Example: Personal Statement: Professional journalist who will use Harvard Law Schools education to protect journalists rights to the first amendment. Ortake the opposite stance: Personal Statement: Professional journalist who will use Harvard Law Schools education to protect citizens rights in the media. Describing internships: You have now established your theme, and thread it throughout your resume. In your internship explanations, discuss how you helped defend journalists rights, instead of stating boring facts like: researched previous cases for local law firm. Example: Defended local journalists rights to freedom of the press by establishing and articulating how previous cases were relevant. Helped client exercise first amendment rights by establishing (name precedent established) But, what if you didnt have the fancy law firm internship? And instead interned as a magazine writerand only got one article publishedon some silly cat fashion show? Its going to be hard to spin that, but you need to find a way to show how you protected journalists or citizens rights. Dont write about the article you created, but focus on your personal statement theme. Example: Protected citizens rights by only printing quotes and names of individuals who signed full disclosure agreements in published article on feline fashion show This protected citizens from any association with the feline fashion show, while also establishing new protocol of gaining full disclosure for magazine quotes Describing education: Similarly to describing your experience, focus on your personal statement. Dont write about how you made the deans list or earned a 3.7 GPA. You can add that in your awards/accolades section. Example: As a member of the law club, created a guiding principles file for school newspaper, outlining how to protect citizens rights If you didnt do something like this, its not too late. Do it now, and email it to the papers editor. Add an accolades section: You can just list when you graduated, if you made deans list, your GPA, scholarships or other awards. Include an interests section: This is the part where you describe your Mt. Everest climb or your internship in Beijing. You dont have to do something that extravagant, but you need to do something. Create a blog or an in-depth research project on your ownor talk about the varsity sports team or the band you play in. You want your readers to take a step back and say wow, thats interesting. Emphasize education or experience: This can be difficult as some schools prefer to see your education first and your work second. But, which expresses your personal statement better? However, you should carefully cut away any extra masking tape, making sure your blade does not cut into the shell itself.If your drums are relatively new or have not seen much action yet, wiping them down with a soft cloth might be all the cleaning they need. Whether Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl or Paiste, you will want to show that you play quality equipment, and lemon juice (or Groove Juice) could eat into those brand names.A part of the aforementioned debate is whether metal polishes such as Brasso or Wenol are actually worth the effort.As it is essential to follow the cymbal’s lathing when cleaning and polishing, some drummers report that trying to buff every bit of wax out of those minuscule furrows is an exercise in frustration.Such an accumulation of wax, over time, could really impact how your cymbals sound!However, all of the experts agree: using household cleaners such as glass cleaner or dish liquid is a definite no-no: the residue such products leave will make your cymbals look dull and affect their sound.You might know that some drummers prefer not to clean their cymbals because the patina seems to add to the tonal quality of the instrument.However, if you and your band have just landed your first gig, you would l ikely rather have shiny, polished equipment that will catch the light each time you hit the crash cymbal or the china cymbal!Bottom line: clean them but don’t polish them, and be sure to inspect them for cracks.Repairing a Cracked CymbalNow that you know how to clean cymbals, you may train your eye on the edges of your hi hats, ride cymbal and splash cymbal to look for minute cracks.They’re not there because you’re a beginner and play badly; you may simply have the wrong cymbal for the type of music you play.An extreme metal drummer should play on something sturdier than 14-inch crashes.The important thing about cracks is to catch them early and repair them quickly, and there are two ways to go about doing so.Using a file or a Dremel tool, you may simply wear away that part of the cymbal that is cracked.Granted, your Zildjian K will no longer be perfectly round, but on the other hand, you won’t have to worry about your cymbal’s sound being compromised.If you’d rather not wear into the metal, you may choose to drill just above the crack â€" but you must be very careful in selecting your bit and while drilling.You may find this tutorial most helpful in repairing your cymbals...Final note on cymbals: be sure to check your felts and sleeves. Global patient satisfaction with healthcare has been found to be lower among patients who have more provider-patient communication problems (Charles, Goldsmith, Chambers, Haynes, Gauld, 1996). The most commonly reported problems involve failures on the part of providers to communicate when communication is expected, such as failing to explain what the provider is intending to do while examining a patient, keeping the patient in the dark about daily routines, and failing to communicate adequately during discharge planning. Dissatisfaction with Healthcare Communication in the Second Language Global dissatisfaction with healthcare becomes more acute, however, when the provider and patient cannot effectively communicate in each other’s language. In a study of 26 international medical graduates enrolled in an Internal Medicine residency program at Wayne State University, a significant correlation was found between language proficiency and patient satisfaction (Eggly, Musial, Smulowitz, 1999). In another study, Spanish-speaking patients in San Francisco were also found to be less satisfied with the care they received from non-Spanish speaking physicians (Fernandez et al., 2004), and in the North-eastern United States, a variety of non-English speaking patients reported less satisfaction than their English-speaking counterparts with emergency room care, courtesy and respect, and with discharge instructions (Carrasquillo, Orav, Brennan, Burstin, 1999). Comparisons made between members of the same linguistic minority group also showed a correlation between language proficie ncy and satisfaction levels. For example, low-English-proficiency Korean patients over the age of 60 in the U.S. were less likely to be satisfied with the healthcare service they received than Koreans with higher levels of proficiency (Jang, Kim, Chiriboga, 2005). Indeed, not speaking the language of the patient adds to a patient’s suffering. One emergency department study found that Spanish-speaking Hispanic patients were half as likely to receive analgesia in the treatment of their long bone fractures as their English-speaking counterparts (Todd, Samaroo, Hoffman, 1993). Worse still, a failure to anticipate communication problems and accommodate low-language proficiency clientele can turn fatal, as was recently illustrated in a news story of an Albanian immigrant who killed himself, thinking his wife had been diagnosed with AIDS when hospital staff told him his wifes blood type was A-positive (The Canadian Press, 2007). Improving Healthcare Access for Linguistic Minorities One obvious solution to increasing healthcare access to linguistic minorities is to use interpreters. Whereas the use of hospital-trained interpreters in pediatric emergency departments was found to increase parents’ satisfaction with their physicians and nurses (Garcia, Roy et al., 2006), in primary care medical interviews a reliance upon interpreters is somewhat more problematic. Aranguri, Davidson, and Ramirez (2006) observed that during regular doctors’ appointments with Hispanic patients about half of the words exchanged between doctor and patient were missing from interpreters’ translations. All small talk, known to increase patients’ emotional engagement in their treatments and their doctors’ ability to get a comprehensive patient history, was eliminated. Patients’ questions, an important indication of patients’ engagement with their own care, were also significantly reduced when an interpreter was used. To reduce the heavy reliance on interpreters in healthcare, Zambrana et al. (2004) recommend hiring more minority, linguistically competent, and culturally competent healthcare providers in managed care networks. They argue that having healthcare providers that speak the same language as their patients will lead to lowered costs, greater healthcare access, better health outcomes, patient satisfaction, and patient compliance. There is evidence to support this claim. One study investigating patient outcomes found that asthma patients cared for by doctors who spoke their language were more likely to take their medication and less likely to miss office appointments or make resource-intensive emergency room visits than patients with doctors who did not speak their language (Manson, 1988). Another study found that patients whose doctors spoke their language asked more questions and had a better recall of their doctor’s recommendations (Seijo, Girmez, Freidenberg, 1991).
